Weather through the month
Early October (1st–10th)
The monsoon doesn't end on a precise date. Early October still sees the occasional afternoon shower, and some mornings have cloud cover on the Himalayan range. Most mornings clear by 9–10am and all trails are open. If early October is your only window, go — just expect mid-October conditions to be sharper.
Mid October (11th–20th)
This is when October earns its reputation. The monsoon tail ends, the atmosphere dries out, and the Himalayan range comes into full focus from the 2,175m ridge. Everest (8,848m) at 176km, Langtang Lirung (7,234m) to the north, Gaurishankar (7,134m) to the northeast — all visible on a clear morning before 9am. Daytime temperatures hit 19–20°C, ideal for a full-day hike. Tihar, Nepal's Festival of Lights, usually falls in late October — the villages along the trail feel alive during the days running up to it.
Late October (21st–31st)
Peak conditions. Trails are dry, skies stay clear, and the low autumn sun hits the snowcaps from around 5:15pm — the best light of the year for photography on the panoramic trail. Nights drop to 8°C, so pack a fleece for early starts. Late October is busy — book 2–3 weeks out if you want preferred dates and a good guide.

What to pack for October
October at 2,175m means a big swing between 8°C before dawn and 22°C at midday. The gaps in the packing list show up early.
- 1Mid-layer fleece — Essential for 6am starts. Not heavy enough for a down jacket yet — that's November. A T-shirt alone won't cut it before 9am.
- 2Sunscreen — UV is strong at altitude even when temperatures feel mild. Most people skip this in October and regret it by afternoon.
- 3Hiking shoes — not sandals — Shaded trail sections stay damp from the monsoon through mid-October. Grip matters.
- 41.5L water minimum — No reliable water sources on the panoramic trail. Carry enough for the full route.
- 5Light down jacket for overnight stays — If you're spending the night, temperatures after dark justify the extra bulk.
