Nagarkot Day Hike

A full day in the hills above Kathmandu

Nagarkot sits at 2,175m on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley — 32km from Thamel, 90 minutes by private car. The ridge gives you a 180-degree Himalayan panorama that no rooftop bar in Kathmandu can match. And unlike most viewpoints, you can actually walk here: pine forest, terraced farmland, stone village paths, and ridgelines that stay open to the mountains for kilometres.

A Nagarkot day hike from Kathmandu with Outdoor Nagarkot means private car pickup from your hotel, a guide who grew up on these trails, and the choice of three distinct routes — from a relaxed half-day loop to a serious full-day traverse. You decide on the morning based on how you feel, what the conditions are like, and how much time you have.

No group departures, no packed minibus, no rigid schedule. The guide adapts to your pace. The car waits where you finish.

Nagarkot Panoramic Hiking Trail

6km ridge loop · 3–4 hours · Moderate

The trail most people come to Nagarkot for. A 6km loop from the village through pine forest and open ridge, with unobstructed views of eight major Himalayan peaks — including Everest at 176km to the northeast. You start and finish at the same point in the village, so no second vehicle or shuttle is needed.

  • Elevation: 2,050m – 2,175m (minimal gain)
  • Best started before 9am for clear peak views
  • Trail surface: forest paths, stone steps, open ridge
  • Teahouses at the viewpoint for post-hike tea

Nagarkot to Dhulikhel Ridge Walk

18km point-to-point · 6–7 hours · Strenuous

The valley rim ridge walk from Nagarkot (2,175m) to Dhulikhel (1,550m). You follow the eastern edge of the Kathmandu Valley for 18km, losing 600m of elevation across open ridge and pine forest. The views stay with you for most of the route — the Himalayan range to the north, the valley below on your left. A serious full-day commitment.

  • Point-to-point — return car waits at Dhulikhel
  • Depart Kathmandu no later than 7:00 AM
  • Pass through Nala village — traditional Newar architecture

Best combination

Start with the Nagarkot Sunrise

The most popular way to do the Nagarkot day hike is to begin before dawn. We pick you up from your Kathmandu hotel at 4am, drive to Nagarkot in time for the Himalayan sunrise at 6:00–6:20 AM, have breakfast with the mountain view — and then start your hike.

You get the full day: sunrise, breakfast, a proper hike, and back in Kathmandu by mid to late afternoon. The sunrise is not billed as a separate tour — it is the same day, the same guide, the same car. The price for the sunrise + day hike combination is the same as the day hike alone.

Nagarkot day hike — common questions

Which hiking trails are available on a Nagarkot day hike?

Three main options: (1) The Nagarkot Panoramic Trail — a 6km ridge loop through pine forest with views of 8 Himalayan peaks, 3–4 hours, starts and ends at the village; (2) Nagarkot to Dhulikhel — an 18km full-day ridge walk along the valley rim to Dhulikhel, 6–7 hours of walking, point-to-point; (3) Changu Narayan descent — a 10–12km downhill trail to Nepal's oldest Hindu temple, 3.5–4.5 hours, finishing at a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You can also combine the panoramic trail with a visit to Changu Narayan on the way back to Kathmandu.

What time does the Nagarkot day hike depart from Kathmandu?

Departure is typically 7:00–7:30 AM from your hotel in Kathmandu (Thamel, Patan, or Boudha). You arrive in Nagarkot by 9:00–9:30 AM and are on the trail by 10:00 AM at the latest. Starting early is important — Himalayan views are clearest before midday, and afternoon haze builds from the valley by 11am on most days. For a full-day option like Nagarkot to Dhulikhel, we recommend departing by 6:30–7:00 AM.

Is transport from Kathmandu included?

Yes. The day hike price includes private car pickup from your hotel anywhere in central Kathmandu and return drop-off to the same location. For point-to-point routes like Nagarkot to Dhulikhel, the return car picks you up at the end point. You don't need to arrange your own transport.

Can I combine the day hike with the sunrise?

Yes — and this is the most immersive way to do it. You leave Kathmandu at 4am instead of 7am, watch the Himalayan sunrise from Nagarkot viewpoint, have breakfast with the mountains in front of you, and then begin your chosen hike. The Nagarkot Sunrise Tour and Day Hike package covers this combination at the same price as the sunrise-only tour — there is no additional charge for adding the hike.

How difficult is the Nagarkot day hike?

The Nagarkot Panoramic Trail (6km) is moderate — some uphill and downhill sections but no technical terrain. Suitable for most people with reasonable fitness and proper footwear. The Changu Narayan descent (10–12km) is easy-to-moderate — mostly downhill. The Nagarkot to Dhulikhel ridge walk (18km) is a full-day commitment requiring good fitness and should not be taken lightly. Your guide will assess your pace and adjust accordingly.

What is the best time of year for a Nagarkot day hike?

October and November are the best months — post-monsoon skies are crystal clear, temperatures are pleasant (12–20°C), and trail conditions are dry. March and April are the second-best window with spring wildflowers and good visibility. December and January are cold but often clear. The monsoon (June–early September) brings heavy rain and leeches on the trails; we can still guide hikes but the mountain views are largely obscured.

Is there a minimum or maximum group size?

No minimum and no maximum. We operate for solo hikers, couples, families, and large groups. For groups of 10 or more we arrange multiple vehicles and additional guides. Larger groups get better per-person rates.

What should I wear and bring on a Nagarkot day hike?

Good walking shoes or trail runners (not sandals or flat sneakers). A daypack with 1.5–2 litres of water. Layered clothing — mornings at Nagarkot (2,175m) can be cool even in October. Sunscreen (UV at altitude is intense). A small snack. Your guide carries a basic first-aid kit. For the Nagarkot to Dhulikhel full day, bring a proper lunch or budget for teahouse food along the route.

How much does a Nagarkot day hike cost?

Pricing depends on group size and chosen trail. The Panoramic Trail and Changu Narayan options start from $45 per person for a group of 2, or $75 for a solo hiker. The full-day Nagarkot to Dhulikhel is priced slightly higher due to the longer guide hours and vehicle logistics. WhatsApp us with your group size and preferred trail for an exact quote — most bookings are confirmed within the hour.

Are the guides local to Nagarkot?

Yes. All our guides grew up in Nagarkot and the surrounding villages. They know the trails in every season, can identify every peak by name and elevation, and know which teahouses are worth stopping at. They speak English and can explain the history of Changu Narayan temple, the farming culture you pass through, and the Tamang and Newar communities along the trails. This is not a guide who drove up from Kathmandu with a laminated route card.

Ready to book your Nagarkot day hike?

WhatsApp is the fastest way to confirm your trail choice, group size, and departure time. Most bookings are confirmed within the hour — including same-day and next-day departures when space is available.
